| Very rare first edition of Albert's general description of the earth, marking the inauguration of scientific geography as an independent discipline and the first attempt at a comparative geography. Edited by the Bavarian mathematician, astronomer and astrologer Georg Tannstetter, who was mainly active in Vienna. "Interesting to the American collector on account of a marginal note relating to Vespuccius, which seems to have been inserted with movable type, on the recto of the last leaf in signature d, after the book had been printed" (Sabin). The contemporary owner, too, has highlighted the name by a marginal ms. note, "Vespucius". Also treats the Middle East with the "sinus Persicus" and "sinus Arabicus" (f. l4r). At the end, Tannstetter provides a brief list of unprinted works by Albertus, to which the contemporary owner has added "De vegetabilis et plantis". - Binding somewhat loosened near beginning; upper edge of title page remargined. | First Latin edition of Alessio's "De secretis", still in six books. The author is commonly identified with the alchemist Girolamo Ruscelli (1520-66). "Das Werk gehört nach Caillet zur 'haute philosophie hermetique'. Es enthält außer alchemistischen auch viele kosmetische Rezepte, ferner solche gegen Pest, Schlangengift, Ungeziefer, wie auch Konfekt, Einmachen von Früchten, Druckerschwärze, Putzmittel, Schlafmittel usw., des weiteren sehr frühe Beispiele zur Syphilis-Therapie und Arsenikverbindungen zur Haarvertilgung" (Horn/Arndt). | Very rare first edition of this important work about the invading Turks. The humanist Amaseo (who died in Udine in 1552) had held the present speech on Jan. 1, 1530 before the Emperor and the Pope, immediately after the peace between the two had been declared. Amaseo hoped that this union would be helpful in striking out against the Turks. - The title (with four-part woodcut border) also bears a decastich by Anianus Burgonius "in commendationem Romuli". - Perfect copy of this rare Cracow imprint. - Göllner 359. | First edition of Jost Amman's encyclopedic book of costumes. A strongly fragmented copy, as usual; in the early 19th century, the plates were mounted on backing paper by the owner, the trained landscape painter Jakob Linckh (1786-1841) from Stuttgart (cf. Thieme/B. 23, 254), who also coloured the volume throughout and supplemented all missing parts of the images and even of the text by hand. Linckh, who had studied in Rome, visited Greece in 1810. There he met Byron, who commissioned him to provide the illustrations for Hobhouse's travel book. - Wants 59 plates altogether; the remainder are trimmed closely at the upper edge, and most have severe defects in the lower half. Although the present collection begins with the plate showing the emperor, as originally issued, the remaining woodcuts follow no apparent order. 20 plates show costumes of Turkey, Arabia, Persia, Egypt, and Ethiopia; others depict Greeks, Russians, and Englishmen. 28 plates show the costumes of today's Italy; German cities are well represented, as are France and Spain, Bohemia and Hungary. Also includes the famous picture of the Brazilian Tupinamba Indians: a man with a crown and belt of feathers, a knife, and a bow and arrow, beside a long-haired woman carrying a baby in a knotted sling. The woodcut is an adaptation of two from the "Recueil de la diversité des habits" (Paris, 1562; Antwerp, 1572) by Francois Descerpz, "one of the first likenesses of the Brazilian Indian" (Borba de Moraes). - Title page shows Jakob Linckh's autograph ownership (dated 1825); somewhat later stamped ownership of Anton Franzin (possibly the like-named Tyrolean law clerk, c. 1840) to flyleaf. - VD 16, W 1487 (BSB copy incomplete). | Seltene zweite (dritte?) Ausgabe des "Hieronymianus", einer Vita des Heiligen Hieronymus. Der Bologneser Kirchenrechtsgelehrte Giovanni d'Andreae (um 1270-1348), Freund Petrarcas, gilt als "der berühmteste der großen Dekretalisten" (LMA V, 555). Aus Verehrung für den Kirchenvater Hieronymus legte er sich den Beinamen 'de Sancto Hieronymo' zu. Sein Tod (an der Pest) "gilt zugleich als Ende der klassischen Kanonistik. In seinen Werken faßte er, von Baldus de Ubaldis als 'iuris canonici fons et tuba' gerühmt, die gesamte kanonistische Lehre seiner Zeit zusammen" (ebd.). - Von größter Seltenheit; über Bibliothekskataloge nur die im Juni 1514 in Basel auf Kosten der Wiener Gebrüder Alantsee gedruckte Ausgabe nachweisbar (186 Bll., 8vo) - wahrscheinlich ein Nachdruck (oder die Vorlage zu?) der vorliegenden Ausgabe. | Only edition. - Printed at the expense of the banker Raimund Fugger, this work presents classical inscriptions and statues collected all over Europe (of which many were in Fugger's own collection). The text is based on earlier studies by Peutinger, Pirckheimer, and others. An exceptionally fine work from the private press of Peter Apianus (1495-1552), mainly known as a mathematician and geographer. Title woodcut by Hans Brosamer (after Dürer) and Fugger's coat of arms (by M. Ostendorfer) splendidly hand-coloured and raised in gilt; undoubtedly the work of the book's previous owner, Johann Spiegler, who signs his name beneath the imprint on the title page ("Annumeror libris Joannis Spiegleri Juliomagensis"). Spiegler is known as a Constance miniaturist active during the first half of the 18th century (cf. Brun, SKL III, 1913) and is sometimes identified with the Constance painter Franz Joseph (Johann) Spiegler (1691-1757; cf. Thieme/Becker XXXI, 370f.). - Slight dampstains and edge tears near end; occasional paper loss remargined. Page tt1r (the printed area of which reaches far into the margin) lacks the final character of the right column. | Pirated edition of Aretino's "comedie" (the first appeared 1553 in Venice) printed by one of the most rebellious and outspoken of all the Elizabethan printers. Wolfe's production was in all probability chiefly destined for the European continent, as all of Aretino's works had been on the Roman Index since 1558; copies were offered for sale at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 1589. Aretino's comedies are considered the best of his works. They rank among the great works of Renaissance drama, and many of their leading characters were prototypes for later playwrights. ‘La Talanta’, for example, prepared the way for Shakespeare’s character Falstaff. Only through Woodfield's research did a distinction and localisation of the various reprints become possible, but the Nordmann copy with the same imprint as ours is still catalogued as "extrement rare [...] comme les 3 autres" (Bibliothèque érotique Gérard Nordmann. Christie's Paris, 27. IV. 2006, lot 34 [Est. EUR 20,000-30,000], but unsold). - Both the first and second part consist of three 'giornate', whereas the third part bears the title: "Commento di Ser Agretso da Ficarvolo (= Annibale Caro), sopra la prima ficata del Padre Sicco (= F.M. Den lateinischen Oden des spanischen Theologen Arias (genannt Montanus) ist jeweils ein blattgroßer Kupferstich zugeordnet, innerhalb der separat gestochenen Bordüre mit einem gedruckten lateinischen Motto und einem kurzen Beitext am unteren Rand. Die prächtigen Kupferstiche nach Pieter van den Borcht zeigen italienisch-manieristischen Einfluß und sind gekennzeichnet durch ihren Verismus und ihre Liebe zum genau gezeichneten Detail. | Fine incunabular edition of Aristotle's Organon and practical philosophy, including the groundbreaking commentary of Averroes. The volume contains the two parts of the six-part set of Aristotle's Works which Torresanus and de Blavis printed for Johannes de Colonia (the other four parts appeared without his woodcut device). Simultaneously, the two printers produced a small folio edition (Goff A-963; GW 2338) comprising only these present two parts (same dates and same composition, but wrapped for 50 rather than 66 lines, and thus with different page count due to reduced printing space). - Averroes, the outstanding Arab philosopher (and physician) of his time, is "memorable chiefly for his interpretation of Aristotle which developed into the complete philosophical system of Averroism. The central feature of this was a theory that the world is eternal, not a creation ex nihilo, but actuated by a creative power continuously at work [...] Averroism was essentially an attempt to reconcile reason and philosophy with faith and religion. Averroes was not unique in this, but he expressed it perhaps more intelligently and forcefully than others [...] Averroism deeply influenced both Christian and Jewish thought [...] and initiated the Schoolmen into the knowledge of Aristotle. | Splendid work by Jakob Krause (1531-1586), Germany's foremost Renaissance bookbinder. A rare presentation copy commissioned by Elector August of Saxony, and thus a great sign of the Elector's favor, as August of Saxony was adamant that his court officials worked for him only (cf. Bibl. Palatina [1986], I 252). For an identical binding made with the same plate (145 x 92 mm with bands and tendrils [Schmidt no. P34]) and the same stamps (Schmidt E41, e. g.) cf. the presentation copy for Count Palatine Johann Casimir in the Bibliotheca Palatina. - The book, first published in 1551, is not actually a translation of Aristotle, but rather a compilation from Aristotle, Hippocrates, Avicenna, Galenus, Averroes and other philosophers, physicians, and scholastic theologists (cf. Hoffmann I, 350). The final 42 ff. contain "Ausserlesene Fragstücke, Marci Antonii Zimare [...] An den Durchleutigsten Fürsten [...] Johannem Castriotum". - Rare; no copy recorded in OCLC. | Second printing of this Latin edition of the "Parva naturalia", edited by the humanist Niccolò Leonico Tomeo (1446/57-1531). The Venice-born Greek of Albanian descent, a student of Demetrios Chalkondylas in Florence, taught philosophy at Padova from 1497 onwards and is said to be the first modern scholar to have based his Aristotle lectures on the original Greek text. Influenced by Marsilius Ficino and Pico della Mirandola, Leonico tried to wed the Platonic doctrine of ideas to Aristotle's psychology. He turned down the Venetian chair of Greek (left vacant by Giorgio Valla), but assisted Aldus Manutius. | 1517 reprint of Ugo Benzi's commentary on book 1, parts (fen) 1 and 2 of Avicenna's systematic "Canon of Medicine", this commentary first published in 1491 by the editor Antonio Cittadino (the omission of of fen 2 from the title is repeated from this original edition, while the Venetian reprint of 1498 notes the presence of the second fen). The editor appends a treatise on fever (ff. 121-124). Avicenna's "Qanun", written in Arabic, was widely translated throughout the Middle Ages and remained the basis of medical training in the West as late as the mid-17th century. It continues in use to this day in parts of the Arab world. Through this encyclopedic work, the author exterted "perhaps a wider influence in the eastern and western hemispheres than any other Islamic thinker" (PMM). "The 'Qanun' [...] contains some of the most illuminating thoughts pertaining to distinction of mediastinitis from pleurisy; contagious nature of phthisis; distribution of diseases by water and soil; careful description of skin troubles; of sexual diseases and perversions; of nervous ailments" (Sarton, Introduction to the History of Science). "In spite of the colophon, which mentions only the first fen, the contents are exactly the same as in the 1498 edition (Stillwell, H 474). The editor of this volume, moreover, and author of the added tract, is not 'Antonius Faventinus,' but Antonius Citadinus faventinus, i.e., Antonio Cittadino of Faenza" (D. P. | Humanist sammelband containing five extremely rare works about the heresies of the Bohemian Brethren, catholic mysticism, and the Pope's wordly power, none of which are listed in postwar German auction records. Includes the first and only edition of an important polemical treatise against the Waldensians and an incunabular edition of the Trial of the Devil, attributed to Bartolus de Saxoferrato: a tradition known in various versions, usually referred to as 'Processus Satanae', in which the Devil claims, before Christ, ownership on humankind. "Trials of Satan were received and edited as late as the 16th century" (cf. LexMA VII, 1391f.). Several contemp.arginalia. - II: A fine edition of this treatise on holy water, by the Spanish Dominican and Cardinal Juan de Torquemada (1388-1468). The title woodcut (with contemp. touches of red, brown, and green colour) depicts a priest before the church, sprinkling his congregation with an aspergillum. - III: Early edition of this preacher's manual first published in 1503, with examples in German and Latin. Jh. eine Reihe von Texten, die die Erlösung in der Form eines prozessualen Streitgesprächs diskutieren. In dem in mehreren - darunter einer fälschlich Bartolus de Saxoferrato zugeschriebenen - Fassungen tradierten 'Processus Sathanae [...]' weist Christus als Richter die Klage Satans (bzw. Mascarons) auf Wiedereinsetzung der Hölle in das Besitzrecht an dem durch die 'advocata' Maria vertretenen Menschengeschlecht und dessen Verurteilung ab[...] Noch bis ins 16. Johannes Brenz (1494-1570), der wohl herausragendste Reformator Süddeutschlands, hatte bei Oecolampadius Griechisch studiert und in Heidelberg den Magistergrad erworben. Von Luther tief beeindruckt, schloß er sich früh diesem an und stand von 1522 bis 1548 der Gemeinde in Schwäbisch Hall vor, wo er behutsam die Reformation einführte. "Durch die Abfassung verschiedener Kirchenordnungen und als Autor des wohl verbreitetsten oberdeutschen Katechismus wirkte Brenz nachhaltig auf die reformatorische Umgestaltung und geistliche Konsolidierung eines luth. Kirchenwesens in Südwestdeutschland ein. | Rare Carthusian Breviary; probably a hitherto unknown variant printing, the collation of which agrees with that stated by Bohatta. The woodcut shows four procession scenes ("Laudate dominum in sanctis eius"). - Top spine-end damaged; slight browning, with occasional worming. Wants the final 7 ff. From the Ritter Waldauf Library in Hall with their engr. bookplate, stamp, and ms. ownership dated 1596. The Imperial Protonotary Florian Waldauf (also: Baldauf; c. 1450-1510; in 1495 countersignatory to the preliminary contract of the Habsburg-Spanish double wedding) and his wife Barbara founded a chapel, a collection of relics, and a ministry for the Hall parish church. As steward of the Waldauf endowment, the City of Hall was responsible for the donations "das alle jar etliche puecher nach anzaigen des predigers zum predigambt gekauft und in der heiligen capellen liberei an ketten gehangen und versorgt werden"; furthermore, the library was directed to acquire books from the estates of religious figures. Contrary to the Waldauf decree, the library was hardly enlarged by systematic purchases, but mainly through the incidental acquisition of books and endowments, primarily from clergymen, monasteries, and schools. The most famous previous owner was Johannes Eck. "After 400 years of existence and only occasional growth, interest in the survival of the Ritter-Waldauf-Bibliothek seemed to dwindle away. In addition, endowment possibilies dropped off completely during the First World War. During the Second World War an unknown number of valuable manuscripts and prints were handed out to private individuals in Hall, in order to secure them from impoundment by the National Socialists. Der englische Katholik G. Bullock (um 1521-80), Theologieprofessor in Cambridge (und Rektor von St. John's College), wurde 1559 nach einer Visitation der Königin Elisabeth seiner Ämter enthoben, da er sich weigerte, den Eid nach der Suprematsakte zu leisten. Über die Bretagne und Belgien verließ er England (seine unterwegs erfolgte Ausraubung durch "häretische Piraten" wird in der Widmung vorliegenden Werks an Papst Gregor XIII. erzählt). Um 1567 zog er nach Antwerpen, wo er seine vielgebrauchte Bibelkonkordanz erscheinen ließ und wo er um 1580 auch starb und im Michaelskloster beerdigt wurde. - Einbände berieben. | Erste Ausgabe der Heiligenlegende des berühmten Kirchenlehrers. Die Holzschnitte zeigen berühmte Heilige; am Schluß der Vorstücke eine neunteilige ganzseitige Darstellung. - Durchgehend leicht gebräunt bzw. braun- und teils auch fingerfleckig; ein Titeleinriß als hinterlegt. Der hübsch blindgeprägte Einband stärker berieben und fleckig; Bezug an Kanten und Ecken angeplatzt. Aus der Bibliothek des Tiroler Geistlichen Johann Stadler aus Hall bei Innsbruck (sein eh. Besitzvermerk am Titel; sein gest. Exlibris mit eh. Besitzvermerk und Datierung 1612 am vorderen Innendeckel); die Innendeckel bzw. Vorsätze mit Indices und Notizen von seiner Hand. Hernach, wie durch ein um 1700 am Hinterdeckel angebrachtes gest. Exlibris sowie Titelstempel nachgewiesen, in der Haller Ritter-Waldauf-Bibliothek. Der kaiserliche Protonotar Florian Waldauf (auch: Baldauf; um 1450-1510; 1495 in Antwerpen Gegenzeichner des Vorvertrags zur habsburgisch-spanischen Doppelhochzeit) und seine Frau Barbara hatten 1501 der Pfarrkirche in Hall eine Marienkapelle, eine Reliquiensammlung und ein Predigtamt gestiftet. Die Stadt Hall als Verwalterin der Waldauf-Stiftung hatte dafür zu sorgen, "das alle jar etliche puecher nach anzaigen des predigers zum predigambt gekauft und in der heiligen capellen liberei an ketten gehangen und versorgt werden"; ferner sollten der Bibliothek Bücher aus den Nachlässen der Prediger und Meßkapläne zukommen. Entgegen der Anordnung Waldaufs wurde die Bibliothek kaum durch gezielte Ankäufe vermehrt, sondern größtenteils durch die zufällige Übernahme von Büchern und Schenkungen, hauptsächlich von Geistlichen, Stiften und Schülern. Der bekannteste Vorbesitzer ist Johannes Eck. "Nach 400 Jahren ihres Bestehens und nur fallweisem Zuwachs schien das Interesse am Fortbestand der Ritter-Waldauf-Bibliothek als geschlossener Sammlung verlorenzugehen. Obendrein war das Stiftungsvermögen im Ersten Weltkrieg vollends untergegangen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde eine unbekannte Anzahl wertvoller Handschriften und Drucke an Privatpersonen in Hall und Umgebung ausgehändigt, um sie vor der Beschlagnahmung durch die Nationalsozialisten zu sichern. | Seltene erste Ausgabe des kirchenrechtlichen Handbüchleins für den Beichtigergebrauch; bis ins 17. Jahrhundert nachgedruckt. Der aus Vigevano stammende Dominikaner Cattaneo (1545-1609) war Bischof von Chiemsee. "Im Besitze großer Gelehrsamkeit, mit den akademischen Graden geschmückt, wurde er als Prediger und Professor und in den verschiedenen Ordensämtern mit vieler Auszeichnung verwendet. Dann des Lehramtes enthoben, erhielt er die überaus schwierige Stelle eines Provinzials für Ungarn. Die religiösen und politischen Wirren des Landes und die äußeren Gefahren von Seite der Türken machten dort einen Mann von ungewöhnlichem Geschicke nothwendig. Dieses bewies er aber in solchem Grade, daß ihm auf dem Generalcapitel zu Rom 1589 von neuem die ausgedehntesten Vollmachten übertragen wurden [...] Er hat eine Anzahl wichtiger, zum Theil oft aufgelegter theologischer Werke verfaßt. Besondere Erwähnung verdien[t] seine oft erschienene "Summula casuum conscientiae" [...] Er soll auch ein gewandter Kenner des Hebräischen gewesen sein und ein Werk 'Gegen die Hebräer' geschrieben haben" (ADB). - Der hübsche Einband mit Justitia-Platte vorn und Lucretia-Platte hinten (gering fleckig; kaum berieben). | First edition of this fictitious homage to King Maximilian, offered by six cities of classical antiquity. Probably written in Pordenone, where Caviceo had lived for several years and was earned his doctor of laws in 1489 from the hands of Emperor Frederick III. The work begins with a reference to the eviction of the Hungarians from Austria: "The six cities are Babylon, Troy, Byzantion, Athens, Carthago, and Jerusalem. They all pay homage to Maximilian and bey for his protection [...] Interspersed with numerous references to contemporary events" (cf. Apponyi). The theologian J. Caviceus (1443-1511) studierd at Bologna and entered the services of Piermaria Rossi, Lord of Berceto, and his son Guido, Capitano of the Republic of Venice. After 1492 he served as vicar general to the dioceses of Rimini, Ferrara, Florence, and Siena. - Printer attribution follows GW (contested by BMC and Indice generale VI). Also contains relevant material from Ovid, Terence, and Propertius. "On trouve dans cet ouvrage des documents fort intéressants sur les festins des anciens Romains et sur les moeurs épulaires de ce peuple" (Vicaire). This classic, compiled by the priest Petrus Ciacconius (1525-81), was variously reprinted until the mid-18th century. - II: "A book which deals with the tokens and traditions of hospitality - religious, social and commercial" (Simon). The "tesserae hospitalitatis" were broken coins of tablets which were joined again as a proof of authority or friendship. Laymarie, ohne Angabe des Druckortes, der häufig mit Lyon angegeben wird, laut Baudrier I, 240 hat er aber nie in Lyon gedruckt. - Der reich verzierte Einband mit geprägter Datierung "1600" stammt aus der Regierungszeit Friedrich I. von Württemberg (1593-1608). Bei dem verwendeten Wappenstempel handelt sich um den bei Haebler II, 93, 1 beschriebenen, der sich auf den Bänden der Privatbibliothek der württembergischen Herzöge findet. Allerdings "wird das Wappen von Württemberg offenbar in viel weiterem Umfange von den Buchbindern dieses Landes zum Schmuck der von ihnen gefertigten Einbände verwendet" (Haebler II, 90). - Ohne die Bindebänder, die Prägung prägnant und wohlerhalten.
